Van Duzen River Bridge at Highway 36 and Highway 101 (1914)1259 viewsNote the wagon and team crossing the bridge. The Redwood Highway is now called Highway 101 and crosses in almost this exact spot today, except it's now four lanes and vehicles are travelling at 65 MPH. This was locally known as the Alton Bridge.
This county bridge, built in 1901 by the San Francisco Bridge Company, consisted of two steel Camelback truss spans with wooden trestle approaches, and carried a narrow, 16-foot roadway. By the early 1920s, the steel spans were badly corroded from the salt-laden coastal air, and the wooden deck and approach spans were rotted. It was replaced in 1924.

Budweiser Clydesdales Visit Fortuna4149 viewsThe Budweiser Clydesdales were in town for a special Fortuna show. Three large trucks rolled into town and set up shop in Rohner Park (more pictures). Within an hour they were ready, and the wagon and team made a large loop through town and rolled down Main Street, much to the surprise and delight of those who were not expecting them. The April shower (only a drizzle) didn't keep people away from the parade and there was also a lot of interest in watching the harnessing process. Photo courtesy of Tiffany Beltz

Budweiser Clydesdales Visit Fortuna1945 viewsTwo tractor trailers carry the Clydesdales and a third brings along everything else--the historic beer wagon, harnesses, and other gear. Performance days (more pictures at sunnyfortuna.com/festivals/clydesdales_apr_03/) for a Budweiser Clydesdale are a combination of excitement and perfection. While the horses are groomed daily, special attention is given to their appearance on performance days. The expert grooms who travel with the horses spend about five hours washing and grooming the horses, polishing the harnesses, braiding red and white ribbons into the manes, and inserting red and white bows into the tails. The entire harnessing process takes an additional 45 minutes.

Downtown Parade1088 viewsThis is Main Street at the 10th Street intersection in the early 1900's. There was really no landscaping in front of the Lane House (the building where Taco Loco is today), those are small freshly-cut redwood trees brought in from the woods just for the occasion. If you look closely at the ones in front of the Friedenbach Brothers store you'll see they are nailed to the sidewalk. That big two-story building on the right was the grade school at the corner of Main and 8th Streets.

Parade, about 1920996 viewsThe Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department on Parade. That big building in the background is the grammer school. We're on Main Street at about 10th, looking west. Note the road was not yet paved even though it was the main highway to the south end of the county.
