Thought We Planted Only Garlic...817 viewsHippeastrum is a genus of about 70-75 species and 600+ hybrids and cultivars of bulbous plants in the family Amaryllidaceae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas from Argentina north to Mexico and the Caribbean. Some species are grown for their large showy flowers. These plants are popularly but erroneously known as Amaryllis, an African genus in the same family. From Wikipedia.May 28, 2007

Essence of Rhododendron1055 viewsRhododendrons are spectacular in bloom but not terribly impressive the rest of the year. Honey produced from these plants has a slightly hallucinogenic and laxative effect. From the Greek rhodos, "rose", and dendron, "tree" and with over a thousand species. There are over 28,000 cultivars of Rhododendron in the International Rhododendron Registry held by the Royal Horticultural Society. This one is at Rohner Park at the Firemans Pavilion. Check out the "landing lights", those series of dots and streaks on the right side of each flower to help guide the insects into the best position for pollination. Info from Wikipedia.May 13, 2007

Thursday Night and It's Bath Time1548 viewsWe can't tell who occupies the boots, but it's a safe bet that down there somewhere there's a fireman. Wait 'til next year...
Know why bucket brigade buckets have a round bottom? They were dispersed throughout town to be were ready at a moment's notice. But a bucket with a round bottom is kind of useless, and that kept people from stealing them.

New Years Eve Flood, 20051073 viewsKen and Gary bringing out a generator. The Public Works garage on Dinsmore Drive is high and dry, but Rohner Creek backs up into town and crawls out of its banks here when the river gets too high. Jan 01, 2006

Keeping an Eye on the Eel1440 viewsA popular spot when the river is at full crest! We're at the Overlook on Riverwalk Drive, near River Lodge, on New Year's Eve 2005. This is the best spot to watch the river as it runs toward the sea. It flows faster than a man can run and sweeps much debris and even whole trees along with it. See this picture taken in 2002, same place, same reason, even the same day!Jan 01, 2006

Farmers Market1403 viewsJune, 2005. The Fortuna Farmers Market is held every Tuesday from late May through late October. Tenth Street is blocked off at Main Street to make available the bounties of local farms and nurseries.
Besides produce and plants the market has a separate area for prepared foods like fresh tamales, breads and jams and for local hand crafts. There's even live music!

Storm is Over!1240 viewsWhat a way to finish up a year! The last two weeks of December brought a couple of back-to-back storms and lots of rain. Many small creeks overran their banks and there were a few bank slipouts. The storm drain system was overwhelmed at times and some streets flooded.Sep 18, 2005

Budweiser Clydesdales Visit Fortuna1969 viewsTwo tractor trailers carry the Clydesdales and a third brings along everything else--the historic beer wagon, harnesses, and other gear. Performance days (more pictures at sunnyfortuna.com/festivals/clydesdales_apr_03/) for a Budweiser Clydesdale are a combination of excitement and perfection. While the horses are groomed daily, special attention is given to their appearance on performance days. The expert grooms who travel with the horses spend about five hours washing and grooming the horses, polishing the harnesses, braiding red and white ribbons into the manes, and inserting red and white bows into the tails. The entire harnessing process takes an additional 45 minutes.Sep 17, 2005
