All Steamed Up948 views2004 Fireman's State Muster in Rohner Park. Eureka brought EVFD Engine No. 2, this Metropolitan Extra 1st Class Steam Fire Engine and even a team of horses to pull it during the parade. This horse-drawn steam fire engine, built by American La France was delivered to Eureka in February 1905. It was considered the most modern in fire fighting equipment and was the largest engine on the Pacific coast at that time. It would pump 1,100 gallons per minute throwing four 2 1/2" streams. After motorized equipment was put in use, the steamer was kept in reserve and pulled by a truck. It was last used at the fire which destroyed the Occidental Mill (Eureka) in 1935. Its original cost was $6,375 and it weighs 6 tons.

Budweiser Clydesdales Visit Fortuna2241 viewsThe Budweiser Clydesdales were in town for a special Fortuna show. Three large trucks rolled into town and set up shop in Rohner Park (more pictures). Within an hour they were ready, and the wagon and team made a large loop through town and rolled down Main Street, much to the surprise and delight of those who were not expecting them. The April shower (only a drizzle) didn't keep people away from the parade and there was also a lot of interest in watching the harnessing process. Photo courtesy of Tiffany Beltz

Budweiser Clydesdales Visit Fortuna1567 viewsTwo tractor trailers carry the Clydesdales and a third brings along everything else--the historic beer wagon, harnesses, and other gear. Performance days (more pictures at sunnyfortuna.com/festivals/clydesdales_apr_03/) for a Budweiser Clydesdale are a combination of excitement and perfection. While the horses are groomed daily, special attention is given to their appearance on performance days. The expert grooms who travel with the horses spend about five hours washing and grooming the horses, polishing the harnesses, braiding red and white ribbons into the manes, and inserting red and white bows into the tails. The entire harnessing process takes an additional 45 minutes.

Essence of Rhododendron581 viewsRhododendrons are spectacular in bloom but not terribly impressive the rest of the year. Honey produced from these plants has a slightly hallucinogenic and laxative effect. From the Greek rhodos, "rose", and dendron, "tree" and with over a thousand species. There are over 28,000 cultivars of Rhododendron in the International Rhododendron Registry held by the Royal Horticultural Society. This one is at Rohner Park at the Firemans Pavilion. Check out the "landing lights", those series of dots and streaks on the right side of each flower to help guide the insects into the best position for pollination. Info from Wikipedia.

Farmers Market903 viewsJune, 2005. The Fortuna Farmers Market is held every Tuesday from late May through late October. Tenth Street is blocked off at Main Street to make available the bounties of local farms and nurseries.
Besides produce and plants the market has a separate area for prepared foods like fresh tamales, breads and jams and for local hand crafts. There's even live music!
